Standard or streaming IP? The first in a series of tips and advice related to Inmarsat’s range of land mobile solutions.
Some basics on the key differences between standard and streaming IP when using BGAN terminals.
• Standard IP is equivalent to a terrestrial ADSL IP-based connection, which can be shared by multiple users.• Streaming IP offers a range of guaranteed data rates of 32kbps, 64kbps, 128kbps and 256kbps, which can be selected manually by the user, terminal permitting.
• Standard IP features data rates of up to 492kbps, depending on the number of users sharing the satellite channel.
• Streaming IP is used for time-critical applications, such as live video and audio broadcasting, where a dedicated satellite channel ensures data is delivered the instant it’s needed.
• Standard IP is best suited to office applications where a small delay is acceptable, such as internet browsing, FTP, and sending and receiving emails.
• Inmarsat recommends the use of BGAN LaunchPad to facilitate selection of your required BGAN service.
• BGAN LaunchPad opens a standard IP connection by default, or the user can choose to select either standard or streaming IP manually.
